What is the Obagi Blue Peel?

By David Maillie

Cosmetic and plastic surgery is almost doubling in popularity every year.  New procedures and treatments are being revealed almost every day.  One of the biggest and best known of these cosmetic treatments is the Obagi Blue Peel.  It was originally invented by Dr. Obagi as a controlled chemical peel with an indicator (blue dye) to make it easier for physicians to use and to see where it has been applied.

The Obagi Blue Peel has been a mainstay of every health and beauty related TV show and magazine.  It has even been featured on TV reality shows like The Swan and MTV’s Made.  The Obagi Blue Peel is well known for its skin rejuvenation properties and its ability to cure moderate to severe acne and even reduce acne scars and wrinkles.  The Obagi Blue Peel is a must for any acne or anti aging skin treatment regimen.  Most dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons offer this peel as an in office treatment.

Most doctors will recommend a week or two of treatment with Obagi Nu-Derm.  This is a course of treatments that helps prepare the skin for the Blue Peel so it will peel more readily and more evenly (it is important to note that a pure TCA peel, also used by many doctors, does not require any expensive pretreatment).   A course of Nu-Derm can cost between $100 and $300 or more and this does not include the price of the actual skin peel performed by the doctor.  The actual Obagi Blue Peel will run on average from $300 to over $800 (prices vary around the country being highest in Florida and California).  A pure TCA peel, in contrast can actually even cost more running from $500 to over $1500.

The Obagi Blue Peel is applied in a creamy paste that will leave a blue stain on the facial skin and neck areas.  It is usually used with a concentration of 15% to 20% Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) added separately to the cream mixture by the doctor or cosmetic surgeon.  Once applied to the skin a fan may be used to soothe the skin and hide some of the burning sensation.  Yes, the Obagi Blue Peel is a chemical peel and works by causing a controlled chemical burn to the skin.  This will result in the skin peeling within a few days and a fresh, rejuvenated skin being revealed.  This chemical peeling process has been proven to build levels of collagen in the skin and can create a tighter and blemish free appearance.

Acne is reduced and even cured in cases due to the Blue Peel’s ability to restore the correct pH to the skin and to make it less conducive to infection.  The peel will completely unclog pores and penetrate deep into clogged pores to kill acne causing bacteria.  Some cases of acne may require several treatments to be effective.  A pure TCA peel has the same effect but is applied in a stronger strength and usually doesn’t require as many re-treatments.  Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is the main ingredient of both of these peels.
